About session five

For our Progress session, we looked at incidents that have arisen both nationally and internationally to look at what happened, what was learnt and what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again.

We are joined by Sarah Schubert (Chair of the Institute of Civil Protection + Emergency Management. ICPEM) and Kevin Crawford (CIAT President) to look at the Turkish Earthquake and the Scottish schools inquiry.

About the speakers

Sarah Schubert - Chair of the Institute of Civil Protection + Emergency Management

Sarah Schubert is Chair of the Institute for Civil Protection and Emergency Management, the oldest learned society for disaster risk reduction. Sara will be speaking about the tragic 2023 Turkish-Syrian Earthquake exploring vulnerability, hazard and lessons to be learned and implemented.

Sarah has a Masters in Risk, Disaster and Resilience from University Collect London (UCL). Her research focuses on organisational resilience and disaster futures. Sarah works as a resilience consultant in financial, health, transport and infrastructure sectors, promoting resilient design of structures and operations.

In an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world ICPEM is an independent collaborating forum. We are dedicated to achieving better outcomes in disasters and emergencies for people, their property and livelihoods, economies, and the environment. We unite professional practitioners and academics to provide an informed and influential voice to influence, shape and educate policy makers, professionals, academics and the public.

Kevin Crawford - President, CIAT

Kevin has been a Chartered Architectural Technologist for nearly 30 years, achieving Chartered Membership in 1993. In his early career, Kevin worked predominantly in the medical and ecclesiastical sectors.  More recently, Kevin entered the residential sector working as an Architectural Technologist within the housebuilding sector. This gave him the background and experience to setup up his own practice in 2009 specialising predominantly in energy efficient sustainable residential design.

Prior to taking on the role of President in November 2021, Kevin has supported CIAT in several positions both Regionally and nationally, being Regional Councillor for the Scotland West Region and being elected Vice-President Technical for three terms.
