APS Weekly Update – Kicking off 2026

2026 has started with real momentum at APS HQ. Work is well underway finalising plans for the year ahead. A full programme of activity is taking shape, including plans for an in-person APS conference currently being developed for September, more on that to follow soon.

Various BSR and CLC guidance published - Staged Applications and key steps between Gateway 2 to Gateway 3 (Building Regulations - England)

Thursday, 18th December, saw another flurry of building safety related updates being published, two sets from the BSR and one tranche of joint BSR-CLC guidance.

Single Construction Regulator proposal published to ensure standards across sector

APS welcomes Wednesday’s announcement by the government to start putting in place plans for a new Single Construction Regulator to bring together standards across buildings, products and professionals.

Additional MHCLG announcements – HRB definition review, Approved Document B consultation and other

Alongside the governments’ Single Construction Regulator announcement, the government published the next quarterly progress report on the Grenfell Tower Inquiry recommendations. The progress report was accompanied by two further publications of importance, on the review by the BSR of the HRB definition and the regulation of fire engineers. The latter gives a glimpse of what is potentially coming down the line for other safety-critical professions.

House of Lords’ report on Building Safety Regulator

The House of Lords’ Industry and Regulators Committee has issued a report titled "The Building Safety Regulator: Building a better regulator”, detailing the findings of their recent inquiry into the Regulator’s performance that took place over the Summer.
