Steven is a data and analytics research business relationship manager at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the national regulator of health and safety for Great Britain. He’s part of a team of research scientists working within the HSE’s Science, Engineering & Analysis Division, who undertake research for the HSE, government departments and for industry, both in the UK and internationally.

Steven’s main areas of research interests centre around the use of data analytic techniques to generate intelligence from datasets to support better health and safety decision-making. Central to this is how organisations can bring together the right data and leverage the knowledge contained to enable a more preventative form of health and safety to be practiced.

Steven’s main vehicle for delivering research currently is through the HSE’s Discovering Safety Research Programme. Discovering Safety was established with a £10 million seed grant from Lloyd’s Register Foundation back in 2019, and continues to deliver research into how advancements in data and analytic techniques can be used to enable more evidence-based, proactive, preventative forms of health and safety to be practiced in construction.

Steven is also co-chair of the HSE’s BIM for Health and Safety Working Group which brings together stakeholders from across the UK construction sector and internationally to explore ways in with building information modelling and better information management techniques on construction projects can help deliver improved health and safety outcomes.
