This session explores what Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are, why they have become a planning, legal and public safety priority, and how poor design can inadvertently create hazards such as drowning risks, unsafe access, slips and falls, and dangerous high-flow behaviour. It will also examine practical approaches to early safety reviews, intuitive layouts and best-practice design principles, helping designers confidently meet their legal and professional responsibilities.
RoSPA has long been a UK leader in water safety, working with national and devolved governments, emergency services, and organisations including the RNLI, MCA, NFCC and the National Water Safety Forum. Our experience in safe water environment design, including SuDS, provides a strong evidence base and balanced public safety perspective that we believe will be valuable to APS members.
