National Members Representative Group (NMRG )

I believe that I have key skills to play an active role in driving the strategic direction of the Association in the coming years. 

We, as an industry, are faced with a rapidly evolving landscape the likes of which most of us have not seen in our lifetime. Grenfell created a totally new set of standards and Regulations that require a considered and measured response from the Association and the skills and knowledge of our members will undoubtedly be in demand but only if we embrace these standards and support and encourage upskilling of our members. 

This is a challenge but not one we should be afraid to rise to. I have held numerous posts including architectural technologist and head of service for local authorities, divisional manager for multi-national consultancies as well as managing and running my own consultancy. 

My current role is as Head of Professional Services for a multi-disciplinary consultancy. I have developed key business and finance skills which, I believe, will permit me to provide valuable input into the management of the Association. 

We must be responsive to our members and the very best way in doing that is to ensure we have a healthy and vibrant Association. 

I believe that we need to develop a “broad church” approach to widening our membership base. The APS should be the leading professional association of choice for all construction health and safety related matters. I would look make this a key priority.

Richard Wilks

Director (NMRG Board )

With 40 years experience working in the built environment, Richard now specialises in forward thinking risk leadership. His early career was in steel fabrication, demolition, and civils where accidents were common and severe. After mature study at bachelor and masters his career progressed in project and design management with in Tier 1 contracting. He then specialised in the new CDM regulations from 1995 and from the late nineties into health and safety risk management generally. He established Abco Safety Management in 1997 and for 19 years led a professional team who provided national services in health and safety consultancy, CDM design risk management and both roles of CDM-C and then Principal Designer. 

Richard is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner, Chartered Building Engineer with a wide and extensive experience. Richard then spent several years as a Group SHEQ Director of a national property maintenance Group with over 1700 employees working out of 32No regional branches and his final role was Chief Risk Officer as the group expanded globally. In 2014 Richard took over as Association for Project Safety (APS) National President and positively steered the organisation through the new CDM 15 Regulations. 

Richard’s positions and representation include: The Construction Industry Council (CIC) Health and Safety Committee, The Construction Health Leadership Group, CABE Director, The Design for Healthy Task Group, HSE’s Asbestos Liaison Group, ICE Health & Safety Experts Panel and career highlights include defining design risk management processes as the CDM Advisor of the HSE HQ development at Bootle, in advising on design risk management for the landscape design of the Olympic Park in 2012 and in launching and drafting the Foreword for the APS Principal Designer Handbook (Guide to CDM 2015).
