Learn all about the principles of Temporary Works management under CDM Regulations 2015 and BS 5975

Who is this course for?

This one-day course is designed for CDM Principal Designers, Designers, Principal Contractors, Contractors, CDM practitioners and others involved in the design, planning, coordination or management of temporary works.

Temporary works are not simply a construction-site consideration. Decisions made during design and pre-construction can significantly influence the temporary works required, how construction activities are undertaken and the risks that need to be managed.

For Principal Designers and Designers, the course explores how temporary works relate to their responsibilities under CDM 2015, including identifying foreseeable risks, considering construction methodology and buildability, coordinating design information and communicating significant risks and constraints to those responsible for construction.

For Principal Contractors and Contractors, the course provides an understanding of the procedures, roles and responsibilities involved in planning, coordinating, implementing and controlling temporary works during construction.

The course focuses on the management and coordination of temporary works under CDM 2015 and BS 5975. It is not a technical temporary works design course and does not include structural design calculations.

Why this course matters

Temporary works are essential to almost every construction project, yet their implications are not always recognised or adequately considered during the early stages of design and planning.

Effective temporary works management relies on collaboration between those responsible for permanent works design, temporary works design, pre-construction coordination and construction activities.

This one-day course introduces the legal, procedural and practical frameworks of CDM 2015 and BS 5975-1:2024, with reference to BS 5975-2:2024 where relevant.

It explains the responsibilities of different dutyholders and how decisions and information should be coordinated throughout the project lifecycle.

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of temporary works and their relationship with permanent works design and construction methodology.

  • Recognise the responsibilities of Designers, Principal Designers, Principal Contractors and Contractors under CDM 2015.

  • Understand how design and pre-construction decisions may influence temporary works requirements and associated risks.

  • Recognise the importance of identifying and communicating foreseeable construction risks, design assumptions and constraints.

  • Understand the principles of temporary works management under BS 5975.

  • Recognise the different responsibilities of the CDM Principal Designer, Temporary Works Coordinator, Temporary Works Designer and Principal Contractor.

  • Understand the importance of communication, cooperation and coordination between design and construction teams.

  • Identify common causes of temporary works failures and lessons that can be applied during both design and construction.

  • Understand the purpose of temporary works management procedures, documentation and control processes
