North West England - Design Risk Management (DRM): A solution to an old problem

For the 26 years that it has been an explicit requirement on designers to manage design risk there has not been any standardised manner in which to proceed, nor a complete understanding of what has to be done. This uncertainty, and omission of critical aspects such as 'soft hazards', has had a major detrimental effect on the industry and an obstacle for PDs in determining compliance.

This talk provides a summary background to this dilemma, but then concentrates on an approach which is methodical, provides clarity, and, importantly, adds value. It also incorporates contemporary practice and provides an overall logical framework against which designers may be assessed by PDs and others.

I will finish by explaining how the root cause lessons from the Grenfell Tower tragedy apply to all designers, no matter what the structure, and how they should feature as part of DRM.
