Structures in the built environment contain substances, whether innate to the structure, left behind by previous uses, or developed as nature re-establishes itself. Many of these substances are hazardous to human health and the environment. Construction activities on these structures present a risk that, without appropriate care, such substances may be released.

Principal Designers, working with designers, and Principal Contractors have a fundamental role to play in eliminating or reducing these risks and the resulting harm. This presentation will explore the simple steps that can be taken to keep people safe and protect the environment
