Duncan Soper
Hello, my name is Duncan Soper and I have been part of the South West committee for 2 years. I joined the committee for three reasons
Firstly, I really wanted to work closely with my peers. Most of the time I am working alone flying the flag for the principles enshrined in the CDM regulations, battling ambitious architects, enraged engineers and persistent project managers. It is really great to work with people who share your aims unreservedly, so it is a real treat to be part of the committee.
Secondly it is a great chance to learn from the other members of the committee. In the South West we have a wide range of experience across may different types of construction projects, anything from working on small residential schemes up to £multi billion projects and high-risk military and commercial ventures. Everyone contributes and it is a chance for simple reflection. The phase why didn’t I think of that. Reverberating round my brain.
Finally, it is a chance to discuss how to deal with challenging parts of our roles. The APS CPD output has been greatly enhanced over recent times especially since Covid and some really valuable sessions have been available from across all the local committees. In the South West we are going to try a collaborative approach from the whole committee. Watch this space, it could be great, but it will be positive and good fun.
As a group of Health and safety professionals we have different ways of looking at issues, based on our expertise and experience, but everyone gives each other the chance to have their say and is treated with respect. You get the opportunity to pick up little snippets of advice and squirrel them away for that perfect moment, if only design team/site/project meetings could work that way.

In my opinion, the APS is the most professional body I have ever been involved with since qualifying as a Chartered Engineer in 1986.
Communication is very high and the level of CPD and technical feedback is second to none.
Sometimes, it takes a crisis for organisations to show their true colours. During the Covid lockdown, when most bodies shut down operations – the APS upped their game and gave the members regular remote CPD courses every week. During that bleak period, the CPD courses were a breath of fresh air and kept many of us focussed in very difficult times.
I am very proud of the association and being a Certified Member.

We cannot rate APS highly enough!...from the quality of their articles, journals, webinars and CPD sessions to the customer service received from the team.
As a SME we appreciate the invaluable support and guidance from APS to keep us in tune and on the right professional track!

The Webinars have been a lifeline for everyone over lockdown. Thank you so much to everyone at the APS for their commitment to sharing best practice and continuing to help the industry improve on all aspects of construction safety.
The APS was a very bright light leading the way during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic when everyone was not sure what way to turn.
Thanks again am I very proud to be a member.

APS has been a trusted friend for many years. With their stimulating interactive programme of webinars, they have been an invaluable source of technical information whenever I have needed to advise clients and colleagues alike on CDM.
APS guidance allows me to speak with increasing confidence and authority on the management of health, safety and wellbeing within construction and with regular updates keep me ahead of the curve in terms of the likely implications of the Building Safety Bill.
Thanks to all for your hard work, commitment, enthusiasm and desire to improve our industry - appreciated!

I have much respect for the APS and the work you do for the members and the construction industry as a whole. Just wonder where we would be without the APS.
For me, 47 years in the construction industry starting out as an apprentice Carpenter & Joiner, having seen many changes in the industry, all for the good relating to Health & Safety as far as I am concerned, of which I consider the APS a major player.
I wish the APS and its members every success in the future, I certainly enjoyed and benefitted for being a member.

I would like to thank you for the webinar on skin cancer
As an expat that worked in Africa for 11 years many years ago, I have suffered from non-melanoma skin cancer and have had two operations. However, it was the first time I have had the descriptions of the cancers specified so clearly and precisely.
The webinar was extremely well presented and taught me a lot. I do try and pass on this message on construction sites, and this webinar gave useful advice in this regard.

I’m delighted.
I’m taken back by the speed of your response and that I’ve received my certificate the same day.
Unbelievable service.

Thank you for the Amazon.co.uk Gift Card! It was an absolute pleasure to complete the survey regarding online CPD event in the 12+ months.
I have enjoyed all of them and have been able to attend the vast majority, which have proved invaluable in my role as an Independent CDM Adviser to DEFRA whilst they deliver a £multi-million works programme.
Thank you again for the voucher, and I look forward to the next round of CPD events in the Autumn. Keep up the good work.

After a very enjoyable summer, which has sped by since I retired at the end of April, I have decided that it is highly unlikely that I will want to undertake any construction safety work in the foreseeable future.
I have therefore taken the decision to leave the APS.
My thanks to the team at APS for the support you have given me over the years.
Peter Nicholas
After 50 years in the construction industry I have decided to start the process of retiring.
I am proud to have been a member, indeed a Fellow, of the APS and have always promoted membership to others.
I have enjoyed attending and supporting the APS.
Please extend my thanks and very best wishes to everyone involved and hope the APS continues to prosper.
Thank you to you for always addressing my queries promptly and in a friendly manner.
Members Feedback Autumn Conference 2022
- WOW! Absolutely faultless – you must all be totally exhausted and very proud of a full day of really thought provoking and informative speakers. The whole event went like clockwork. Whiskies all round to you, Ray and the whole APS Team. Thank you so much. and not forgetting our goodie bags!
- Many congratulations on a memorable and informative day. The APS is certainly in a good place to be a voice for the future as we get to grips with all the new legislation in a difficult world.
- Good conference with a lot of thought-provoking points. The presentation worked really well once I got in, the pre-recorded segments were very good. The breakout element was also well done and allowed a little flexibility on what we wanted to see. Many thanks for the conference pack, my family loved the chocolate. they had most of it whilst I was at the conference!
- I did have a few issues initially trying to follow a zoom link. However, once in I found the event very useful. Well done to you and your team for putting it together. The chocolate was great too!
- I thought it was a very good event – good content and well put together and organised – notwithstanding the few technical glitches. Thanks to all concerned.
- Thank you again, it was excellent! You folks must have spent a long time preparing for the Conference.
- Best conference the APS has put on. It was slick and professional it was interactive and gave a great experience. The speakers were fantastic, and took a lot away from what was said.
- Raised awareness of expectations of BSA
- It was organised in a different way from the usual webinars and the efforts from the APS team were very much appreciated
- Yes, I enjoyed and appreciated the virtual aspect of the conference. If the Conferences reverted back to face to face, I doubt I would be able to attend as time and cost would prevent. Or as in the past something would come up and I would be unable to attend.
- An excellent, worthwhile, great value for money conference. Attendance was a time very well spent. Pease keep virtual access to conference and all CPD events so that I can to continue to attend for hopefully many years to come. Very well-done APS and MORE PLEASE!!!!!!!
- I did really enjoy the conference and appreciated the pack sent out by APS
- Thank you for a very good, informative conference.
- I thought the talk on materials was really good.
- I am always interested to hear what the HSE are thinking about something.
- The virtual aspect - Everything ran extremely smoothly - very impressive.
- Great day with great speakers!
- The most valuable aspect was the Knowledge of speakers
- BSA update from Helen was excellent.
- Well done Team APS. A good event. Virtual events are hard to manage and there are some learning points from technology, but overall, excellent conference. My thanks to you all.
- Great conference, well planned and great speakers. Goody box was also a nice touch! Thanks APS
- Loved the way our (now) past president walked through the virtual wall...!
- I liked the idea of the goodie bag - a subtle reminder of the difference between in person and online.
- A good overall picture of life with the Building Safety Act as a given, and the way forward.
A great success - lots of praise to the software people who allowed Lesley and all presenters / speakers to operate so well. Appreciate that some delegates had trouble to start with, but I was lucky, and all worked well.
- Liked the presentation, face-to-face is good, but doing it via computer makes it easier to attend rather than travelling to London, Birmingham etc. which increases the time.
- The most valuable aspect Sharing the knowledge of the speakers, who are at the forefront of the industry.
- The HSE BSA talk was the most practically beneficial to me. I always find that Andrew is a good speaker and presents the content well.
- Excellent introduction to the building safety act as I am new to the profession and was unaware of it.
- A valuable aspect is the amount of information by knowledgeable experts.

It's been a fun ride, but I have finally hung up my copy of the CDM Regulations and retired, so after 25 or 26 years I will not be renewing my APS membership.
Many thanks for the help and support the APS has provided over the years, without the APS guidance and support, life as a Planning Supervisor/CDM Co-ordinator/Principal Designer would have been considerably harder.
I wish the APS well for the future, exciting times are ahead.
Mark Waterson
I will not be renewing my membership this year due to imminent retirement.
I would like to say thanks to all at the APS for the excellent training, guidance and support given over my many years of membership.
Mike Beattie
I took early retirement from my post as CDM Officer and as such would not be looking to renew the certification.
I would like to thank you for all your help and assistance with carrying out my role and would like to congratulate you on running a very professional association.
