MOMENTUM: A New Cradle of Industrial Revolution

Lee’s submission stood out for its exceptional depth, technical excellence, and forward-thinking approach.
His design incorporated advanced modular construction techniques, AI-assisted gantries, and a modular “kit-of-parts” system that maximised safety while improving efficiency. Judges praised his detailed risk mitigation strategies, which addressed complex issues including site contamination, flood risk, working at height, and pedestrian evacuation.
His innovative use of the River Tyne for material transport, carefully considered site logistics, and strong integration of CDM principles created a proposal that was both practical and visionary. Supported by high-quality diagrams and clear sequencing, Lee demonstrated a rare combination of creativity, technical expertise, and meticulous planning.
A very worthy first-place winner.

Ethan Wishart, Liverpool John Moores University
Ethan’s proposal combined sustainability, innovation, and technical clarity in an imaginative and well-structured design.
His use of prefabricated mass timber and modular construction significantly reduced on-site risk while minimising environmental impact. Judges were particularly impressed by his logistical strategy, including barge delivery to the site, and his thoughtful integration of long-term maintenance systems.
The project addressed key construction hazards — including working at height and excavation — through careful planning, use of hoists, safe roof access strategies, and prefabrication.
With strong visuals and clear sequencing, Ethan delivered a creative yet technically rigorous submission.

“Our Neighbourhood? Hill Yeah!”

Abbie’s entry demonstrated a well-rounded and integrated approach to buildability, maintainability, and usability.
Judges commended her comprehensive risk management strategy, addressing hazards such as working at height, flood risk, and challenging ground conditions. Her use of modular construction and marine delivery methods showed creative engagement with site constraints.
Her dual-access strategy, commitment to accessibility standards, and carefully considered structural sequencing reflected a strong awareness of safety throughout the design process. Clear presentation and well-structured explanations brought her ambitious vision convincingly to life.
