This week marks Women in Construction Week, leading into International Women’s Day on Sunday - an important moment to recognise the contribution women make to the construction and built environment sector, and to reflect on how far the industry has come.

APS headquarters is supported by a predominantly female staff team, working to support professionals across health, safety, and risk management. Our membership spans architecture, engineering, project management, surveying, and design risk management - areas where diverse perspectives contribute to better decision-making, safer outcomes, and higher professional standards.

More women are entering construction-related professions, taking on leadership roles, and shaping the future of the built environment. However, challenges remain - from underrepresentation in senior roles to barriers around visibility, progression, and inclusion. As an industry, we must continue to address these challenges collectively, not just by attracting more women into construction, but by supporting and retaining the women already working within it.

To mark Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day, we are highlighting a series of on-demand webinars delivered by women working across the industry. These sessions, previously hosted by APS, are available to watch and showcase the knowledge, experience and impact of women in design and construction health and safety.

There is positive momentum - but there is still more to do. By supporting professional development, promoting inclusive practice, and amplifying women’s voices, we can continue to build an industry that is safer, stronger, and more representative of the society it serves. This week, and every week, we celebrate the women shaping the built environment - and recommit to doing more, together.

Unlock the Hidden Backbone of Construction: Temporary Works With Siu Mun Li, multi award winning, highly accomplished civil engineer with over two decades of experience in the construction industry. She was recognised as the Most Influential Woman in Construction in 2023, is a Director of the UK’s Temporary Works forum (a specialist knowledge society of the Institute of Civil Engineers) and a committee member of the IOSH Construction Group.  

Project H&S Information Management (UCL) and Office 365 BSA Digital Tools With Margaret Sackey, Chartered Civil Engineer on the ICE Health and Safety Expert Panel and ICE H&S Register (Advanced). A Chartered Safety Practitioner, CMIOSH and an Honorary Fellow of Association for Project Safety.

Asbestos Awareness in Construction With Joanna Parker, who has has over 20 years of experience in the asbestos sector, with the past 12 years dedicated to asbestos management. Her career has spanned a wide range of roles, including asbestos surveying, analytical work, laboratory analysis, training, and auditing, giving her a well-rounded expertise across the industry.

Language Barriers on Work Sites With Dr Morwenna Fellows, a linguistic consultant, advising on how to improve communication on multilingual construction sites. From the UK and currently living in Barcelona, she holds a doctorate in Construction Management and a Master´s in Translation, Interpretation and Intercultural Communication.

Competency in Construction: With Rosalind Thorpe, Director of Education and Standards at CIOB. Ros joined the Institute in 2009 as an accreditation officer and took on the role of Head of Education in 2011. Prior to that, Ros worked as a teacher of English and corporate courses manager at the British Council in Moscow, where she lived for 10 years.
