The Association for Project Safety (APS) is delighted to announce its National Student Award for 2019 with a total prize fund of £3,000. This award is intended to encourage continuous improvement and recognise excellence in construction design risk management.
The award is open to all students studying construction related disciplines including design and health and safety. The award scheme is intended to introduce students to the issues of buildability, maintainability and usability and their responsibilities in terms of construction health and safety risk management.
Students should outline how their thought process contributed to the elimination of risks in any one, or all, of the following; construction, maintenance, operation and deconstruction of a structure or site. Where risks cannot be reasonably eliminated, students should consider innovative ways in which the risks can be reduced or managed. Submissions should be based on projects undertaken in the current academic year, 2018 – 2019.
One of the key aims of the CDM 2015 Regulations, is to integrate health and safety into the management of a construction project. The regulations encourage everyone involved to work together to identify hazards and eliminate or reduce them during the design process. Risks that cannot be eliminated or reduced must be managed. At its core, CDM2015 is intended to protect the health and safety of people working in construction, and others who may be affected by their activities. The CDM2015 Regulations clearly differentiate between the pre-construction phase and the construction phase of a contract.
With this in mind, in preparing your entry for the APS National Student Award the judges will assess your approach with regards to the CDM2015 Regulations and the Principles of Prevention.
