Letter from Lesley: We all need others to lighten our load

28/06/2019 - 02:47PM

I believe, as Frank Sinatra said, that when I find myself, ‘flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race’. I’m not being all saccharine sweet about it – or pretending I’m superhuman - but, emphatically, for me, it’s important keep on going and not to settle for the easy choice. Even in my darkest hours – and there have been some listening to the lifeline of the World Service at 4:30 in the morning – I have retained faith that I will never have to tackle anything I won’t, ultimately, have the strength to face head on. This may well be naïve but so far it has worked for me. And I am grateful to a lifetime of family, friends, wonderful colleagues and compassionate strangers who have been there at the point when I felt like giving up.

I am full of admiration for people who take action to lighten the load others may be bearing.

So, today, I am shouting out for our very own Malcolm Shiels. We’ve mentioned before that Malcolm was taking to the canvas ring to raise money for cancer research. He lost on points – although he is a winner to me – and raised £920 for Cancer Research UK. If anyone would like to help top up his sponsorship money you can donate at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/malcolm-shiels

I also want to give you the heads up the APS autumn CPD series is available for booking. CPD 44 will be concentrating, two years on, from the Grenfell disaster, on fire safety.   There are dates in all your regions, starting at the end if September and finishing in mid-November.  You can find out when it is in your area and book your place by clicking on the right-hand side of this page.

There are many of you, like the residents of the tower, who have faced much worse that I may ever know or have come through. APS exists to provide strong leadership that can improve the long-term lot of everyone associated with construction. Together we can help make a real and tangible difference to the outcomes for others. It may, as Old Blue Eyes said, simply be, ‘That’s Life’ – but, as the lyrics so aptly said, ‘I know I’m gonna change that tune when I’m back on top in June’.
