Letter from Lesley: Stay warm, stay safe

01/02/2019 - 11:45AM

This week’s cold weather has clearly being causing chaos on the roads - and for travellers - in some parts of the country. I was sitting at Luton airport waiting to come back up to Scotland watching the ground staff trying to keep planes airworthy with tonnes and tonnes of de-icer. They were working flat out and I felt it was more than slightly unrealistic of passengers not to expect delays. I always travel prepared – I’ve books, and snacks and there’s always some work to be getting on with.

I had been down to attend the EventsEvents summit, chairing the Association Summit –  the conference stream dedicated to people from membership organisations. I really enjoyed the experience and got some great ideas for our own conference which is booked for 4 September 2019 in Sheffield. Early Bird tickets are going on sale next week so keep a weather-eye out for information on the topics and provisional line up over the coming days.

In the meantime, while the weather is wintry, preparation and planning are key to keeping work moving and people safe on site. The Health and Safety Executive has some top tips and useful advice:

  • ensure the personal protective equipment issued is appropriate
  • provide mobile facilities for warming up, and encourage the drinking of warm fluids such as soup or hot drinks
  • introduce more frequent rest breaks
  • consider delaying the work – can it be undertaken at warmer times of the year without compromising on safety?
  • educate workers about recognising the early symptoms of cold stress
