Philip Brown will discuss the various elements of the design and construction of the Peace Bridge, including the following:
- Background and client brief
- Conceptual design
- Structural design (outlining the main elements of the structure)
- Pre-construction activities (This includes the production of an environmental impact assessment and gaining planning approval)
- Construction activities (including some H&S aspects)
- Community benefits and involvement
Syd Magill will then provide delegates with a summary of measures taken to ensure compliance with the CDM Regulations during the design and construction of the Peace Bridge.
About the speakers
Philip Brown, BEng CEng FICE, is Engineering Director for Graham Construction, a national civil engineering and building contractor, operating throughout the UK and Ireland. A Chartered Civil Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, he has worked for GRAHAM since 1993 on a variety of civil engineering projects. As Engineering Director, he leads the company’s engineering team with responsibility for design development, value engineering and temporary works.
In recent years, he has been responsible for delivering some high profile projects including Dargan Bridge in Dublin, Stobcross On-Ramp Refurbishment at Kingston Bridge in Glasgow, Samuel Beckett Bridge in Dublin, Peace Bridge in Derry / Londonderry, Dounreay Low Level Waste Vaults in Scotland, Tennison Road Bridge in London and Green Port Hull. Philip served as Chairman of ICE in Northern Ireland in 2017-18 and Vice-Chair from 2014-17. He is GRAHAM’S Supervising Civil Engineer and a Reviewer for ICE. He is a former member of the Editorial Advisory Panel for ICE’s Bridge Engineering Journal and has authored four papers published there, winning the John Henry Garrood King Medal in 2012 for his paper on the Samuel Beckett Bridge in Dublin. He has also been awarded the Ferguson Medal in 2003, 2007, 2012 and 2016 for the best paper presented to ICE’s Northern Ireland region.
Syd Magill, BSc CEng FaPS TechIOSH, is the Senior Principal Designer for McAdam Design, who are one of the largest independent multi-disciplinary consultancy practices in NI operating across the UK and Ireland. With a civil engineering background, he has worked for McAdam Design since 2002 undertaking various CDM regulatory roles and currently acts as Principal Designer for schemes in GB and NI, and as PSDP for schemes in the Republic of Ireland.
Over the past few years, Syd has been involved in a wide variety of construction schemes involving new build and refurbishment work at Wastewater Treatment Works, Water Treatment Works, an Anaerobic Digestion Plant, primary/secondary/higher education schools and colleges, Queens University, Ulster University, Stranmillis College, gas supply station upgrades, etc. He was one of the first persons in Northern Ireland to obtain Registered Fellow status with the Association for Project Safety and is currently a Regional Committee member of APS.
