CPD: Spring 2018

Reduction of Musculoskeletal Disorder through Design

Work related musculoskeletal disorders are the most commonly reported cause of occupational ill health in Great Britain.  The prevalence in the construction industry is high, higher than in health and social care.  We are all aware of the negative impact that worker ill health is having on our industry and if it carries on unabated the industry’s capacity will continue to diminish and we will not be able to create the housing, infrastructure and amenities that this country needs.

SME contractors clearly find the movement of materials difficult to manage.  Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that they do not understand the manual handling hierarchy and believe that manual handling training is an effective control measure.  A Cochrane review in 2010 confirmed that manual handling training does not reduce the incidence of back pain or back pain disability when compared with doing nothing or doing something else.  Prevention through design can be a very effective ‘something else’ if properly considered and executed.

This seminar will enable designers to understand the role that they can play by eliminating and reducing the need for manual handling arising from their designs which will in turn reduce the harms that the poor management of manual handling causes.  The seminar will also address the matters that Designers and Principal Designers can take into account when considering the significance of the residual risks and how these risks could be managed allowing them to make informed design choices.
