Doing the double: Q&A with two-time National CDM winners, Mouchel

04/05/2017 - 09:19AM

We caught up with Doug Potter, Senior Project Manager at Mouchel, to find out what winning not one, but two National CDM Awards at our celebration event last year has meant for the team. Here, he tells you why you should consider putting your best work forward into this year’s scheme too.

Why did you enter the National CDM Awards in 2016?

We entered the CDM Awards because they are very well respected within the industry and helped to demonstrate Mouchel (soon to be WSP from 1st July), Highways England and Costain’s commitment to delivering safe projects and improving our health and safety performance. Our values align perfectly with APS and so being involved with the awards was a great fit for us.

How did you find the entry process into the National CDM Awards?

It does take some time to put a well-thought-out awards submission together to showcase your very best work. However, the time is worth it as the questions we were asked as part of our submission were thought provoking and have helped us to demonstrate our capabilities and performance on other occasions.

What did it mean to you to winning a National CDM Award?

We won two awards and so it was a fantastic achievement, which was very well received by the whole of the site team, our parent companies and client - Highways England. We received some great feedback and were asked to provide a number of briefing notes and contribute to various internal newsletters and also Highways England’s national publications. It’s really given us a lot of kudos with our stakeholders, positioning us as the award-winning experts, and boosting our credibility.

How did you find the awards celebration at the House of Commons and the evening event at the Radisson Blu?

The consensus with colleagues, senior management and clients alike was that the day – from start to finish – was a resounding success.  Attending the House of Commons and meeting local MPs doesn’t happen every day so it’s a one to remember.  Plus, the evening celebration was well managed and interestingly compared - lots of great entertainment to enjoy while spending time with your peers and networking with other professionals in the industry.

Would you recommend others to enter this year’s National CDM Awards?

Yes, definitely give it a go if you think you have an excellent piece of work that fits within one of the nine different categories. As it’s free to enter the awards, you’ve nothing to lose but perhaps a lot to gain.
